Job Title: Maintenance/Custodian Worker

Department: Facilities Support Staff

Reports to: Director of Maintenance

Classification: Hourly Non-Exempt

 

Posting Period:  November 2, 2022 - Until position is filled

 

Terms of Employment: 12-month position. Salary rate reviewed annually with benefits according to Board policies.

 

Work Hours - During Normal School Days

Day Shift: 6:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. (M-F)

Evening Shift: 3:00 P.M. - 11:30 P.M. (M-F)

 

Work Hours - During Summer

During the Summer, all shifts typically work 6:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. Monday-Thursday (10 hrs/day-four days/week).

Summary

To help maintain the physical plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times. To make the facility safe and secure for all who enter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform various custodial and maintenance tasks including but not limited to cleaning and minor electrical, plumbing and facility repairs.  
  • Collects and properly disposes of refuse.
  • Perform general labor inside and outside the physical plant including safe handling of materials and supplies, moving equipment and operating power-driven equipment.
  • Maintain and cares for safe condition of flooring, door frames, doors, window glass & frames, toilet partitions, staircases, stair treads, wall surfaces, ceilings, hardware, and similar structural elements in the facilities owned and operated by the district.
  • Maintain and cares for facilities in accordance with state and local safety and code requirements and Board of Education policies and administrative procedures. 
  • Moves items for the district such as tools, equipment, appliances, machinery, furniture, fixtures, and a variety of educational and instructional materials.
  • Be responsible for timely completion of work orders.
  • Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Required to clock in and out each day they are scheduled to work. Clocking must reflect true time worked.
  • Work overtime as directed.
  • Ability to work to implement the vision and mission of the district.
  • Demonstrate the proper use & care of hand tools (such as hammers, saws, chisels, planes) and equipment (power saws, drills, rivet guns, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or scheduled form.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, dress, and appropriate professional manner for the work setting.
  • Adheres to good safety practices.
  • Adheres to all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

Qualifications

  • Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the completion of a high school diploma.
  • Ability to read sufficiently well to understand labels, instructions, and directions as they pertain to work performance, safety, and record keeping aspects of the job.
  • Prior experience with hand tools.
  • Prior experience with electrical and plumbing.
  • Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Team oriented

Physical Demands

Regularly walking, hearing and speaking, being able to communicate in noisy environments such as construction sites, have close moderate and distance vision ability, must be able to travel between district facilities. To lift, turn, bend, twist, and carry a minimum of 60 lbs repeatedly. Must be able to work overhead, as well as on a ladder. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp and use tools, and climb ladders or other equipment. The employee will occasionally lift or move up to 90 pounds.

Hearing

Must be able to hear a conversation in a noisy environment

Conditions and Environment

Employee will be required to regularly work inside and outside, which may involve inclement weather including rain, snow and temperatures below freezing or in excess of 100 degrees. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level could be occasionally loud.
